GOLF COURSES
Atlantic Dunes
A complete reconstruction of the Ocean Course, Hilton Head Island’s first golf course, this seaside course has a pronounced Lowcountry feel accented by coquina shells and seaside grass. Modernized by Davis Love III, the coastal classic features rebuilt holes to accommodate modern shot values and frame scenic corridors.
Haig Point
Haig Point lies to the North end of Daufuskie Island, across the Calibogue Sound from Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island. Accessible ferry, part of the fun of playing the Rees Jones design is that both the 8th and 17th seaside holes have two greens to choose from. The course has received high praise for its design and quality, being named in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” and “Best in State,” as well as earning a spot in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 in the World.”
Harbour Town
Designed by Pete Dye and contracted by Jack Nicklaus, Harbour Town is a celebrated course on the PGA Tour known for its focus on finesse, imagination, and shot making over strength. The course debuted in late 1969, quickly earning a spot on America’s 100 Greatest as one of the Top 10. Harbour Town features low-profile terrain with abrupt changes, no mounds or elevated tees/greens, and tiny greens hung over water hazards with trees blocking shots. The unique 13th green, edged by cypress planks, was designed by Alice Dye, who contributed to the course’s overall design.
Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes
The oldest course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort (1970), the RTJ Course at Palmetto Dunes is still one of Hilton Head’s best. The Jones course sprints for the Atlantic which comes into view on the par-5 10th hole and winds its way back to the clubhouse. While the 10th is certainly the signature hole, it’s simply part of a great transition to a terrific back nine, where the finish, with water coming into play on most of the holes, is among the best in the area. The impeccably maintained course, features a great variety of holes overall, and the par 3s are stellar.
